General information:

The Industrial Automation Laboratory, founded by the cooperative enterprise of the Control System Division of ITU School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Siemens Corporation in 1997, has been effective in the education process by updating its automation technologies continuously. Within the framework of an agreement signed between SMC-ENTEK and ITU School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2003, functionality of the laboratory has been increased by new hardware that enables Electro-pneumatics and Mechatronics education. Recently, in 2009, Industrial Automation Laboratory went through a major renovation. A seminar room is built for seminars and ongoing training. This room is equipped with multimedia systems for presentations and industrial controller education sets for training. An air conditioning system is also installed to improve the working conditions. Industrial Automation Laboratory was moved to a new location by a cooperative enterprise of the Control and Automation Engineering Department and Siemens Corporation. One of the aims of this laboratory is to become a base for the new Industry 4.0 concept with the most recent hardware and software. In a total of 156m 2 work area it is possible to provide educational training for 34 students. In the lab, Siemens TIA Portal software is being used, which allows installation and programming of various systems like Siemens S7 1200/1500 PLC’s, I/O, HMI’s, drivers, motion control systems and communication systems under a common framework. The Industrial Education program given in the laboratory is performed practically on the latest hardware. In this laboratory, which enables education of approximately 200 people per year, information concerning problems and needs of industrial organizations is acquired. This  information provides a significant contribution for reconstruction and management of the Control and Automation Engineering program.
